Work Experience

Sr. Staff Engineer

Qualcomm Technologies
August 2013 - October 2023
  • (www.qualcomm.com), Buffalo, NY -- Worked on accuracy testing (FAR/FRR) of fingerprint recognition comparing internal and external algorithms, finding causes of errors, simulation of acuracy of different sizes of fingerprint sensors which were implemented on various cellphone manufacturers including the Samsung Galaxy. -- Developed a novel modality for biometric identification from PAPG images using vascular perfusion (pattern of blood flow) under finger/wrist, achieving EER of 2.5% (patent pending). This work was also used for the Blood Pressure monitoring project as the perfusion features were highly correlated to BP. -- Did Machine Learning tests for continuous blood pressure measurement project using wrist wearables (Medical Imaging and Sensor Technology) for 1.5 yrs. Reported accuracy/predictions for decision making. -- Worked on FBI (Appendix F and PIV) certification of the Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor used on mobile cellphones. -- Trained technicians on fingerprint recognition and developed an in-house 14-module course with exam for "Introduction to Biometrics" which was taken by 175 people in the company. --Acted as liaison between external European fingerprint algorithm vendor and Qualcomm. Also represented Qualcomm as affiliate for CITeR/NSF conferences.

Computer Scientist

Air Force Research Laboratory
August 2012 - May 2013
  • (www.dcscorp.com)-- Ohio -- Worked on Soft biometrics. Did literature review to identify classes of humans using physical traits. -- Developed an algorithm for optimization of Histogram of gradients (HoG) to detect human silhouettes. -- Developed working proof-of-concept for biometric measurements of human body from images.

Senior Research Associate

Alcorn State University
November 2009 - July 2012
  • in the Advanced Technologies Department (www.alcorn.edu), Mississippi. -- Worked on multi-sensory image fusion project (DoD grant). Worked on image registration of nearinfrared and long-wave infrared facial images. -- Worked on Thermal Face recognition (DHS grant). Worked on face detection and eyeglass detection algorithms. Wrote a manuscript for a conference. -- Worked on the face recognition algorithm using piecewise correlation of isotherms and their relative geometry, developing algorithms in Matlab. -- Worked on testing of algorithms for cancer detection in mammography (DoD). -- Taught Wireless Technologies I, II class to undergraduate class.

Biometric Scientist

Pay By Touch
October 2005 - March 2008
  • (www.paybytouch.com), California. Responsibilities included accuracy testing and evaluation of new fingerprint technology. -- Conducted statistical analysis in the lab to make a prediction of sensor/algorithm pair accuracy in order to recommend for commercial/retail deployment, primarily in grocery stores. -- Tested new fingerprint sensor units - for False Reject Rate, Failure to Acquire and image quality to predict False Accept Rate. -- Integrated sensor APIs into the application for testing, calibration of settings of the optical enrollment sensor with the help of a software engineer. -- Tested algorithms after template -standards conversion. Managed two test technicians. -- Handled correspondence with external companies and biometric technology providers to solve problems in the field.

Principal Research Scientist

Identix Inc
June 2002 - September 2005
  • (an L-1 /IDEMIA company) (www.l1id.com), New Jersey, USA, in the research group focusing on fingerprint recognition (security technology). -- Responsibilities included qualifying/ certifying different types of fingerprint sensors for use with the fingerprint recognition algorithm. It involved front-end image processing for noise reduction and algorithm parameter tuning in order to bring the performance close to benchmark. -- Implemented an API for sequence checking (authentication algorithm for slap and roll images) in Livescan fingerprint capture devices (DHS) according to specifications in C/C++. -- Supported DoD projects including RAPIDS/DEERS fingerprint system improvement and porting of code for the Symbol hand-held biometric device project. -- Improved capture software for a laptop fingerprint sensor and tested improved performance. -- Formatted templates to international (ISO) standards for UN/ILO project. -- Conducted algorithm tuning and performance testing, device testing and face surveillance data analysis.

Compublox Inc
September 2001 - September 2001
  • Wrote a technical report to advise on the state-of-the-art in commercial fingerprint recognition technology.

Algorithm Engineer

Bioscrypt Inc
October 2000 - May 2001
  • (an L-1 /IDEMIA company) (www.bioscrypt.com) Toronto, Canada, in the research and development group. Responsibilities included optimization of the biometric algorithms for performance accuracy for the Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC). Simulations were run using C/C++ and IDL. Conducted comparative testing of various in-house algorithms. Developed a core-finding algorithm for detection of fingerprint cores required for alignment of candidate image fingerprints and stored templates before authentication.
